Boys I’ve Known

Let me tell you a lesson, boy.
That when a Venusian makes contact,
it is because she clearly sees
the suffering of all beings.

She recognises
the struggle of the human species.
She can see
the pain in your heart,
the darkness you hold closest.
She is trying to help you.

She seeks only to console.
Only to offer compassion,
from one soul to another.

She sees beneath
the facade you show to the world.

She can identify
the real self.
She is not fooled
by your clothes,
by your swagger,
by your hard-man act.

She does not see
men and women
as separate entities.
Men to be enticed,
women as competition.

She sees only the soul.
The raw, human spirit.
Swollen with heartache,
bursting with loneliness.

She seeks only to comfort
every living thing that she sees.

And you could see this most beautiful talent clearly,
if you weren’t so vacantly preoccupied
with your biological tendencies.

If you could only make a friend of her,
without seeing only
some sordid sexual opportunity.

‘Sure hun’

Do not ‘hun’ at me.

This woman is not a commodity.
This woman is not
some feeble minded sex toy,
existing for your gratification alone.

This woman is not persuaded
by your compliments,
by your patronisation,
by your coercion.

This woman is intelligent.
This woman is streetwise.
This woman has experienced
more suffering than you have any knowledge
or understanding of.

This woman is compassionate.
This woman holds integrity
in the highest esteem.

Do not think you can woo her
with compliments.
With ‘hun’.
She does not respond to such vacuous disregard.

She only responds to careful consideration.
Time taken to understand
that which sparks her interest.

Humility, commitment,
a strong moral code.

Without which,
you may as well not waste your time,
for you, are just a boy.

  1. This would be wonderful published in a book about dating for young people (for both teenage girls and teenage boys…for one, “watch out for this”, and for the other, “don’t even try those tricks we are on to you”!) Anyway, nicely done!
